Origins and development

The cemetery developed into Saarbrücken’s central municipal burial ground. It preserves graves of former city leaders and more than ten areas commemorating victims of wars from different periods.

Origins: Work on the Hauptfriedhof began in 1914; civilian burials began in 1916. The cemetery is in Alt-Saarbrücken, at Am Hauptfriedhof 21, 66117 Saarbrücken. Its area is approximately 61 hectares.

Design and present-day character

A large, park-like municipal cemetery with several ceremony halls, a crematorium, historic sections and numerous war-grave and memorial areas.

Read this character description together with the development of Saarbrücken Main Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
